(WMC) – The future of the U.S. Indoor Tennis National Championships is once again in question with the announcement of the sale of the Racquet Club to local investors.
Shark Sports and Entertainment of San Jose, California sold the club on Sanderlin in East Memphis to a Memphis ownership group headed by Steve Vallentine and Dabney Collier. Shark calling the sale "necessary," because the company wants to concentrate on its "hockey operation, the San Jose Sharks of the NHL."
The Memphis group is working to buy the U.S. Indoor Tournament, a tier 250 level event, which is also owned by Shark Sports. Shark sold the Tier 500 event that was played here for several years, along with an adjoining Women's WTA event, to Rio de Janeiro last year.
Professional tennis has been played at the Racquet Club since 1976. Past champions include Tennis Hall of Famers Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe, plus Pete Samprass and Andy Roddick, along with Bjorn Borg, Stefan Edberg and Ivan Lendl.
The Racquet Club is also home to the University of Memphis Men's and Women's Tennis Teams.
