MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - The Republican National Committee is hosting its spring meeting in Memphis. It kicked off at The Peabody Hotel on Thursday.

Memphis happens to be a very Democratic city; local and national leaders say hosting the RNC in Memphis was intentional.

"Any time we can bring a convention of this size of any kind into our city, it's because we're so proud of Memphis, and we like to show it off," said Senator Mark Norris. "So, it's great emotionally, but also economically."

On Thursday morning, the group hosted a "Rising Stars" town hall meeting to showcase a different kind of Republican.

Six panelists from all over the country showcased how they are breaking stereotypes.

Annapolis, Maryland's mayor, Mike Pantelides, hosted the states first-ever Twitter debate.

"It was a bit of a challenge trying to explain to some of the people on my staff where the debate would be held," he said. " 'We're doing it on Twitter.' 'Where is the debate gonna be?' 'It's on Twitter.' "

But, despite the confusion and the questions, Pantelides said it worked.

Colorado Representative Clarice Navarro said telling her story connected her to voters by more than their party affiliations.

"Doing things just a little different sometimes works," she said. "I had the first town hall on Facebook. And it was an amazing turnout."

Those "rising stars" join hundreds of Republicans in Memphis this week.

"It's a great location, but strategically it doesn't hurt, but it sends the message out and reminds people that there is an alternative and I'm proud to be part of that," said Norris.

Tenn. Governor Haslam also spoke at Thursday's meeting.

The Republican National Committee's spring meeting continues through Saturday. Visits to Graceland and National Civil Rights Museum are also planned.
