MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - FedEx donated 500 books to a local school, and it was all in the name of one special employee who is about to retire.

Parents and teachers are always trying to get their students to read; across the city there is an ongoing effort to increase literacy. Thanks to a generous donation, students at Southern Avenue Charter School have more than 500 new books in their library.

Employees from FedEx Inside Sales Team marched into the school on Thursday with a special delivery.

Second grader Karima Foots could not wait to check out a new book.

"You take them all, and you read them every night until you return them," said Foots.

Her reason for reading is exactly why FedEx stepped up.

In all, 532 books were donated to the school's new library.

Mr. Don Tummins was also honored for 30 years of service with FedEx; he says they will continue supporting the school even after he retires.
