MASON, TN -
(WMC) - Police in Mason, Tenn., along with Tipton County animal control, seized nearly 100 cats from inside the former Mason Market Deli on Highway 70.
Mason Police Chief Jim Paris said the cats were neglected. Small kittens, their eyes matted shut, were kept in a separate room. Some cats were even found hiding in the ceiling.
A citation for animal abuse and neglect was issued to the cat's owner, Charlotte Creasy, who showed up after police arrived.
"I've been in animal control for almost eight years," said Terry Pool, Tipton County Animal Control. "This is the worst."
Mason police and animal control were called after complaints came in about the stench surrounding the market.
"They're all spayed and neutered, all have their shots," said Creasy, who lives in Memphis.
Creasy says she drives to Mason several times each day to take care of her cats. She says she is operating a cat rescue.
"I have two vets," she said. "One vet comes here when I have a problem. He comes to the rescue. The other vet lives in Shelby County."
In an update from the Collierville Animal Shelter, who is helping with the adoption process, Creasy has signed over felines. Nearly 100 in all, most of have some sort of upper respiratory infection and about half have more serious problems.
Donations are being taken at the Tipton County Animal Shelter and the Collierville Animal Shelter.
The cats will be up for adoption sometime next week. If interested, please contact Tipton County Animal Control at 901-837-5919.
