Alex City 12-year-old set to become city's youngest business owner

ALEXANDER CITY, AL (WSFA) -

An Alex City 12-year old girl isn't your typical pre-teen. Hannah Walton is not only an aspiring artist but a fashion designer too. What's more is Hannah is about to make history in the business community in Alex City.

"I've always wanted to own a business," Hannah said.

The Alex City Chamber of Commerce confirms Hannah is the youngest person to own a real business complete with a storefront in downtown.

Hannah's merchandise is either painted or stitched together by her own hands. The name of Hannah's business is 'Hannah Z.'

"This is my artwork and the clothes I made myself," Hannah said.

The 12-year old is also displaying handmade bowls.

Allyson Walton admitted she got nervous when Hannah first told her dream of owning a business but Walton says the more she thought about it the more she thought, why not?

"Hannah is put together pretty well. She is smart and she's talked with a number of people including friends," Allyson Walton said.

Hannah is home schooled, which means she'll run the business five days a week and study in the back. Mom plans to be with her every step of the way. Both mother and daughter agree this arrangement will not be easy but the life experience, they say, will be something to grow from.

"I'm not nervous. I just don't worry about it," Hannah said.

"She's failed before but we live on the positive side," Allyson Walton said.

The Waltons say they've spent $5,000 of their own money to start up 'Hannah Z. Allyson Walton says her name is on every piece of legal document associated with the new business. Walton is confident her daughter can do this.

Initially, Hannah will only have one employee but hopes the business does well enough to hire 10 people within a year or so.

"Our goal is $500,000," Hannah said.

It's been said part of the American dream is to have your own business. Hannah Walton is getting an early start at 12, and she tells WSFA 12 News she understands that much like today's weather, the economy won't always be sunny.

Hannah Walton's journey and dreams begin tomorrow with a soft opening.

The grand opening is set for sometime in the first week of June.
