Talks are in the preliminary stages for a new park in Northport.
The land is just off 5th Street, between Downtown Northport and the Tuscaloosa Regional Airport, and is owned by the Friends of Historic Northport. The Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority has a long-term lease on the land.
Northport Mayor Bobby Herndon says the city council must first consider the details and the finances of the potential project. "I don't think it would be acted on until the new budget, the 2015 budget came out, if the council so desired," Herndon said. "Like I said, we're going to do all the investigation, all the due diligence, and see if we can afford it."
If it is feasible, Herndon says he likes the idea. "I think it would be great. Great quality of life thing for our citizens. Walking trails, and there's a lake out there, and you've got the historic bridge that was placed out there a few years ago."
The Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority also says the idea is in the early stages. Some of the ideas discussed for the land include camp sites and a dog park.
