MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - Friends and family are remembering a Nashville police officer who was killed in the line of duty. Michael Petrina was hit by a car as he was helping someone on the side of a road.

Petrina was born and raised in Memphis. His big brother, now left behind, is sharing his story of a bond broken way too soon.

"That was how Michael was," said his brother, Anthony Petrina. "Made everyone around him better just by being there."

Michael was supposed to be the best man at Anthony's wedding. That is, until he was hit while directing traffic on Interstate 65 on Saturday morning.

"Yeah, I miss him a lot," said Anthony. "Michael got bigger and stronger. He did all that so he could help take care of people. That's what the did."

Anthony says Michael gravitated toward dangerous jobs, from joining the Army National Guard to the police force, to the blue ribbons lining the street in his honor.

"Michael went with, um, with him doing exactly what he went out there to do. Just to help people. To get things going. To make his area better," he said. "I'm his big brother. And I could not be more proud of the life Michael led and everything he was."

Anthony says Michael connected with World War II history.

In lieu of flowers, his family asks that donations be sent to an organization called Forever Young Senior Wish Organization, which grants senior veteran's unfulfilled wishes.
