SIMPSON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Around 10:02 pm there was a multiple vehicle accident on US 49 southbound just north of Mendenhall.

According to Mississippi Highway Patrol, an 18 wheeler, driven by Andres Hernandez, 61, was traveling southbound when it was struck from behind by a 2003 KIA Optima driven by Lacinda Jaymes, 26, from Magee.

There was also another 18 wheeler traveling southbound on US 49 driven by Katherine Randolph from Grand Prairie,TX.

Trooper Eric Henry says that Randolph tried to avoid hitting the Kia Optima that was blocking the roadway and ran across the median over the northbound lane into the trees on the northbound side.

Officials tell us the KIA also had a young boy inside the vehicle that had to be cut out.

Both the driver and the passenger of the KIA were flown to UMC.

MHP says that neither 18 wheeler driver was injured.
