SHELBY COUNTY, TN -
(WMC) - A popular Memphis musician is recovering from surgeries after being shot during a performance on Saturday.

Ricky Buchanan, also known as 'Slick Rick,' was shot at The Stage Stop in Raleigh.

Karen Brown was performing at the time. She rushed over to help her friend.

"I jumped off the stage and ran over. He was laying in the floor bleeding. Thomas, the sound guy, and I put pressure on his wounds, found out where he'd been shot, and told them to call 911," said Brown. "I had to look at him and tell him, 'Look at me. I'm telling you, you're not going to die. I promise you. You're not going to die.'"

Police say Slick Rick was walking to his car when two men dressed in black and wearing bandanas demanded his money. They sped off in a small green car.

"He thought somebody was trying to steal his car out in the parking lot. He yelled at them, and they shot him," said Brown.

Slick Rick's mother, Nita Makris, owns The Stage Stop. She's been at her son's bedside since the shooting happened.

She's using social media to keep family and friends updated on her son's condition.

There's a vigil for Slick Rick outside The Stage Shop in Raleigh. Family and friends also set up an online account to help with medical expenses.
