It's a beautiful afternoon, and you're outside in the park. Then, a powerful thunderstorm moves in within minutes. There are no nearby structures or buildings for shelter, but your car is nearby so you make a run for it. After all, the tires will protect you from lightning strikes, right?Wrong. It's an idea that was first thought of in the late 1800s, on bicycles. A rubber tire is an insulator, so it is very difficult for it to conduct electricity. The same with rubber-soled shoes. The problem...More >>

Slide Rock State Park in Sedona, AZ, has reopened now that the two-week-old Slide Fire has been 90% contained, according to officials.

Fire crews aren't going home just yet: Approximately 200 crew members are still at the site of the fire, including Tucson's Northwest Fire hot shot team.

The fire burned more than 21,000 acres and is believed to be human-caused. Officials continue to investigate who may have started the blaze.

Meanwhile, a lightning-caused fire on the Grand Canyon's North Rim is a quarter of a mile from a historic cabin and lookout tower.

The Galahad Fire has burned nearly 2,000 acres since it started 10 days ago. Firefighters are letting the blaze burn to maintain forest health.

A Grand Canyon National Park official says both the cabin and tower are considered protected, despite the fire's approach. Potential fuels for the fire have been cleared away, and the cabin has been wrapped in the same material used in firefighter's fire shelters.
