WARSAW, POLAND (HOST TV/CNN) - President Barack Obama voiced his strong support for Ukraine and its newly-elected leader, shortly after the two met Wednesday in Poland.

Obama is on a European tour largely focused on the crisis in Ukraine.

He also spoke at a ceremony in Poland on Wednesday, to mark the 25th anniversary of the country's return to democracy.

He was applauded and cheered when he said the U.S. will stand with Ukraine, Poland and all former Soviet states.

"I know that throughout history, the Polish people were abandoned by friends when you needed them most," Obama said. "So I have come to Warsaw today on behalf of the United States, on behalf of the NATO Alliance, to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to Poland's security."

"As allies, we have a solemn duty, a binding treaty obligation, to defend your territorial integrity. And we will. We stand together-now and forever for your freedom and ours. Poland will never stand alone," Obama said.

The president's tour continued to Belgium later Wednesday for a meeting of the G-7.
