FORT FISHER, NC (WECT) -

Thousands of people came to Fort Fisher this weekend for the annual Carolina Sand Blast Beach Soccer Tournament. This is the seventh year for the annual event.

Organizers say it continues to grow in size, the first year they only had a few teams and now they have 101 teams participating in the event.

Teams came from all over the state of North Carolina, and even from Virginia and Georgia.

Michael Bennett who started the event said it is just a fun way for families to kick off summer, and for kids to celebrate the end of the regular soccer season.

"This is just a kick off to summer and just something fun for the kids to do," Bennett said. "It's a little competitive but super fun and everyone has a good time and if anyone loses they don't care they just go for a swim in the ocean."
