(WMC) - The Memphis Tigers basketball team will spend Thanksgiving in Las Vegas for the third-straight year, taking part in the 14th-annual Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational.
Memphis opens play on Thanksgiving day against Baylor. Indiana State and Illinois will also play that day, with the winners of each semi-final meeting up in the championship game Friday, November 28th.
First things first, the Tigers getting summer drills underway at the Finch Center on campus. Last year it was all about expectations of a team that featured 4 senior guards. This year, there's very little talk about Memphis in the preseason.
Redshirt freshmen Pookie Powell and Markell Crawford head up the class of newbies, a team full of fresh faces and very little actual game experience.
"We have a lot of guys back just not a lot of guys who've played," said Tigers coach Josh Pastner. "And so they understand the terminology now we are really relying on guys who haven't played to step and produce and produce in a hurry. Because before we know it we are going to be playing games in November."
Pastner says right now is about teaching, and he likes the way his team has responded so far.
