SOUTH CONGAREE, SC (WIS) -

Buried among the news that Lexington County Sheriff James Metts and two other well-known county residents were indicted by state and federal officials was a charge against the former South Congaree police chief.

Jason Amodio, who resigned from his office after being placed on administrative leave by town officials, was charged by the State Grand Jury with common law misconduct in office.

A release from the attorney general's office says Amodio accepted payment in return for seized gaming machines while he was police chief.

Back in May 2013, state and federal investigators raided South Congaree Town Hall in search of records. Sources told us back then the raid had something to do with an ongoing investigation into the seedy underbelly of illegal video poker machines that had reappeared in South Carolina.

After Amodio's resignation, the mayor, a town administrator, and a council member also submitted their letters of resignation, but no charges were ever filed against those three people.

South Congaree Town Council met Tuesday night for its regularly scheduled meeting and spent much of it behind closed doors in executive session. After, we caught up with Mayor Brian Jackson.

"Only thing I can tell you is that since I've come in, we've come along way making sure to ensure integrity in everything," said Jackson.

Jackson said he also had no idea about the accusations against Amodio.

"I wasn't told until I actually sat down on the bench, somebody told me," said Jackson.

Jackson says he is trying to move the town forward past all these accusations.

"We have a great chief here, a great staff here," said Jackson. "We've done our part in ensuring integrity. We've got some more officers we're looking to hire this coming year, adding to some departments so we're really looking at some good things."
