Garbage talks renewed at commission meeting

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

"Lots with no buildings, no structures, no houses, no people. Hence, no garbage," said Sara Seago.

She was one of several residents who spoke out at today's commission meeting.

"I've asked the question, what will I receive for this $150 fee on these thirty lots?" asked Lucien Williams.

The fee, which first appeared on estimated tax bills recently sent out, is for curbside pickup of garbage for vacant lots throughout Augusta. But some people said, they don't want it.

Commissioners voted unanimously to draft a new policy which would alleviate those concerns for those who don't want it.

"You can opt in, it's not putting them in a situation where they would have to opt out," said Mayor Deke Copenhaver.

Another big debate surrounding the difference in trash fees paid if you live in the city or suburbs.

"If a fee structure was implemented where the fee was the same for both urban or suburban, there would be a difference in the corresponding urban service millage rate," said Donna Williams, Finance Director.

Commissioners - again - voted unanimously to change to a flat fee, including a mill rate credit.
