CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

A Burke High School senior is being honored on a national scale for her achievements in track and field.

Raven Saunders has been named the 2013-14 Gatorade National Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year. A trophy was presented to Saunders during a press conference at Burke High School Wednesday morning.

Saunders was an absolute force this year in track and field events. Her accomplishments include:

  • Set a national prep record at the Taco Bell Classic in April, launching the shot put 56 feet, 8.25 inches
  • Captured the national title in shot put at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor championships with a throw of 56 feet, 7.5 inches
  • Won two individual state championships at the Class AA state meet, leading the Bulldogs to a 10th-place finish as a team
  • Her winning discus throw of 148 feet, 5 inches earned gold at the state meet by more than 42 feet

In addition to her athletic achievements, Saunders maintained a 'B' average in the classroom and donates her time to SkillsUSA, a national student-empowerment organization.

Saunders plans to continue competing in track and field at the college level this fall. She has signed a National Letter of Intent at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where she will receive an athletic scholarship.
