MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - The race for Shelby County district attorney general continued to heat up on Wednesday.

Democratic candidate Joe Brown clarified comments in which he questioned Republican incumbent Amy Weirich's sexual orientation.

In a news conference about the dangers of leaving kids in cars, District Attorney General Amy Weirich responded to the comments in which Joe Brown questioned her sexual orientation in a video posted to Facebook.

"My family didn't sign on to be part of the Judge Joe Brown show," Weirich said.

Brown was heard saying that some believe Weirich should come out of the closet during what he called a private gathering.

"I'm talking to a captive audience in a night club and they're laughing," Joe Brown laughed.

Weirich did not found anything funny about the comments on Wednesday. The wife and mother of four called the comments in the now deleted video baseless and harmful.

"The fact that I now have to have a conversation with our 8-year-old son and our 12-year-old daughter about harmful baseless, delusional comments is just a sad day for Memphis," Weirich added.

Brown claimed he heard the allegation from a radio show caller and implied there may be some questions about Weirich's relationship with an employee.

"Where it was going was not whether it's gay or straight, it's just why do you seem to have this close relationship with an employee of yours," Brown said.

Again, Weirich called the allegations baseless. Brown said the media questioned him about his divorce and felt there should be similar questions directed at Weirich.

The fireworks continue and the election is still months away.
