Editorial by Tracey Rogers, Action News 5 general manager:

(WMC) - The "Blue Flu" and "Red Rash" are terms that have hogged headlines for the past week and many of us are watching this situation very closely.

We are worried about the safety of our city as police officers and firefighters call in sick in what appears to be a work slow down.

It appears these public servants are sending a message to city leaders and council members after a vote to cut to their health care benefits.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the police officers and firefighters who have not called in sick or taken part in this work slow down.

Your refusal to become a part of the "Blue Flu" or "Red Rash" should be commended.

If you see an officer or firefighter in uniform, thank them for continuing to work and protect our city.

Let me know what you think about the "Blue Flu" and "Red Rash," email me at abettermidsouth@wmctv.com or like my Facebook page, and post a comment.

The officers and firefighters who refuse to call in sick as a show of protest are making this A Better Mid-South.
