HAVANA (CNN) – Russian President Vladimir Putin is in Cuba on Friday.

Putin’s visit comes just days after Moscow agreed to forgive nearly all of Havana's outstanding debt to its former communist benefactors.

Russia is pressing for closer military and intelligence ties with Cuba.

Putin is touring Latin America. He wants to increase Russian economic cooperation with the region.
