MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - Did you know that Memphis could be one of the best places to start up a business? According to CNN Money, it ranks as one of the top 10 cities in the country.

Start Co. is a company, located in Downtown Memphis, that makes it their job to help get new businesses off the ground. This summer, it is taking on 18 teams and preparing them for a demo day that could end with investors for entrepreneurs with good ideas.

Maggie Owsley is not from Memphis, and she never thought she would end up here until she started her own company called Play-tag.

"Play-tag is a wearable device for dogs," said Owsley. "It's a dog tag that goes on your dog's existing collar, and it communicates with your mobile app."

With an idea and a concept, Owsley moved to Memphis from Brooklyn, New York, for a chance to seek funding through Start Co.'s Upstart Program for women entrepreneurs.

"In Silicon Valley, you're lucky if you can get a lunch meeting with your coworkers," said Owsley. "Here, huge companies come to office hours, you get to talk to them, talk to tech people, marketing people."

Owsley is not alone. Seventeen other companies from around the world are in Memphis to execute their business concepts with Start Co.

Business owners, along with CNN Money, are taking notice that Memphis is an up and coming city.

"We have noticed. I noticed. I'm from San Francisco," said Mara Lewis, program coordinator. "I've been there for about eight years. Memphis was on my radar as the next up and coming city."

So much so that Lewis moved to the Bluff City four months ago to help with programming. She says Memphis offers resources like mentors, advisors, and large companies willing to help founders build businesses.

With the new startups come a wide range of companies from data collection to fashion, even beauty product companies like eDivv.

"eDivv is an online marketplace for trading beauty products," said co-founder Casey Casterline.

Casterline and Jon Catz moved to Memphis from New York and are turning their idea into an online beauty product trading platform.

All of it is happening in the heart of Downtown Memphis.

"Being one of the first, or potentially an early company, to be able to say we started off in Memphis is awesome," said Catz.

The people participating in the summer program with Start Co. have less than 40 days to finish their products and prepare them to pitch to investors. If you would like more information about Start Co., click here: http://neverstop.co/
