SHELBY COUNTY, TN -

(WMC) - As the Tennessee State Senate race heats up, challenger Lee Harris opens up about his campaign against incumbent Senator Ophelia Ford.

Lee Harris is a University of Memphis law school professor and a Memphis City Council member. He is using what Ford said on WMC Action News 5 as part of his campaign.

Harris is sweeping District 29 as he campaigns for the seat Ford has held for eight years.

He is making Ford's many absences from the Senate a campaign issue. Ford first talked about the absences when WMC Action News 5's Janice Broach talked with her. She denied missing half of the session because of illness.

"I missed the last week in session other than that I've never missed a session this year. I have not. I have no idea where they to got their information," she said on Wednesday.

Harris is using that story in a news release and on his campaign page.

"What I'm asking folks in the community is to consider performance when they go in the voting booth, and performance at a minimum means showing up," he said.

Ford says she did not consider Harris a threat. Meanwhile, Harris admits the Ford name is quite the hurdle to overcome, because the Ford dynasty has shown it gets results. But he does single out Ophelia Ford as not being like the other Fords.

"In this case, everybody has certain members in their family that are different," he said.

Harris says he will campaign hard up until the primary election in August.
