HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Hercules, Inc. has begun a clean-up of on and off-site contamination that the
Environmental Protection Agency said will protect public health and the environment.

Last Monday, work was initiated to clean-up chemicals called, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which the EPA said were detected in shallow off-site groundwater along the eastern property boundary and on-site near the southern boundary.

The EPA said there's no current threat to public health.

It also said the work is an interim step, pending further site investigation and evaluation of final site-wide corrective actions.

The work includes removing contaminants in an off-site groundwater monitoring well and removal of an underground petroleum storage tank on Hercules property south of 7th Street.

The company will also coordinate with the City of Hattiesburg to replace sewer lines along Providence Street.

Ashland, the parent company of Hercules, closed the plant in 2009.
