MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - At least three people are injured after gunfire erupted on Interstate 40 between two cars Tuesday.

One woman who was shot was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The details remain unclear, but police are investigating.

According to preliminary information from a Memphis Police Department spokesperson, two vehicles were traveling eastbound on I-40 when shots fired from at least one vehicle.

The shooting suspects' car is described as a light blue/gray vehicle, possibly a Mercedes. The second victim's car is a gold Nissan Altima.

The suspects were driving in the same direction and began shooting into the Nissan, police say. That's when the woman riding in the car was shot in the foot.

A woman riding in the back seat of the Nissan was also struck by gunfire and then jumped out of the vehicle. A second backseat passenger also jumped out.

The man driving the vehicle drove to a gas station at 1184 Covington Pike where he dropped off the passenger. The other two victims who were in the back seat were picked up by someone in a private vehicle and then taken to the same location, north of East Memphis, for assistance.

The driver of the victim's vehicle fled and has not been located. Also, the suspects who reportedly shot at the victims have not been located.
