EAST MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - Hundreds of people are still without electricity on Tuesday following Monday night's storm.

Families in East Memphis are finding ways to cope without electricity. But, it hasn't been easy.

When Debbie Powell's power went off, so did her refrigerator. Since then, she's been buying ice in a desperate attempt to protect her food.

"I'm afraid the things in our refrigerator will go bad, I had to go out and get ice for that," Powell said.

Powell's air conditioner went out and with that, her kids spent a lot of time playing outside.

"Well yes, I think it is true that the boys have been playing outside more, which is good. They're not into electronics," Powell said.

Powell says after 24- hours without power, her house has gotten very stuffy. Flashlights, candles and open windows have been a big help as they try to keep cool.

When asked if she thinks she can make it another day without power, Powell responded, "Well, we can last another day, another week, but it will definitely be an inconvenience."

The strangest part is that Powell's neighbors across the street never lost power.

"Just some frustrations, you know, not being able to access, you know, the things we're use to, like e-mail and the Internet," Powell said.

For the Powell family, being without power came with a silver lining. Because they had no power, they spent more time together as a family.

"We've been playing some games and just having fun as a family," Powell said.
