(WMC-TV) - The Memphis Grizzlies chose to keep backup point guard Nick Calathes for the upcoming season.
Calathes is coming off a year where he averaged 4.9 points per game and 2.9 assists per game, but was also suspended after the regular season. Calathes will miss the first 13 games of the upcoming season after testing positive for a banned substance.
Several European clubs went after Calathes in the offseason, offering him as much as $7 million over the course of his contract. Because the Grizzlies control his rights, the team was able to retain Calathes with a team option for $816,482.
Throughout the offseason, both interim general manager Chris Wallace and head coach Dave Joerger showed interest in keeping Calathes.
