MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC) - The Austin Texas Police Department's recruiting unit will set up at the Memphis Police Association for two days while they look for possible employees.

A well-produced YouTube recruitment video claims "only the best make the cut."

And the Austin, Texas Police Department (APD) is now taking aim at Memphis.

The Memphis Police Association is hosting APD, who tweeted Tuesday morning that its recruiting team would be in Memphis July 16 and 17 looking for current officers interested in coming to Austin to work.

"What worries me is we're losing the quality people," said MPA President Mike Williams.

Tuesday afternoon, Memphis Mayor A C Wharton held a news conference to further address concerns.

"They have to do what's best for themselves," said Wharton. "I understand — and we will not hold that against them — they have families to look out for."

The police union reports a rise in police officers jumping ship and blame the decision to cut benefits as further motivation to move on.

"We're already at 71 for this year," noted Williams.

According to WMC Action News 5's Austin affiliate, their police department's modified academy gets experienced officers on the streets in half the time of rookie recruits, and more than 100 positions need to be filled, possibly with Memphis' finest.

"I would hate to see them leave -- and I'll say that point blank," added Wharton.

According to Williams, he was approached by APD and the union routinely helps facilitate opportunities for officers.
