Two sisters charged in Richmond stabbing on GRTC bus

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Two sisters are facing malicious wounding charges after police say they stabbed another woman on a GRTC bus, Monday afternoon. Jonae Cox, 21, and Shamia Cox, 20, were denied bond. Meantime, a 25-year-old female victim is recovering at VCU Medical Center.

A church pastor helped police nab the pair, minutes after the bloody stabbing. Larry Miles, pastor at Highland Park's Fresh Anointing Cathedral, was sitting at the Starbucks with his wife. He noticed drama unfolding between three women near a GRTC bus. Miles says one of the women held a knife behind her back, as the bus made its stop near Broad and Lombardy Streets.

Police say sisters Jonae and Shamia Cox had an ongoing beef with the 25-year-old victim, who refused to get off the bus after them. Miles did what most wouldn't. He ran outside the coffee shop, aiming to defuse the escalating scenario. However, Miles says one of the sisters had already started stabbing the victim, who was still on the bus.

Miles watched the victim bleeding heavily. The two young women rushed off the bus, but he wasn't about to let them breeze by. The pastor got off the bus and chased the women for about five blocks. He used his cell phone to call police, describing the pair to dispatchers. Miles says that VCU police ultimately detained the suspects.

"I proceeded to follow them because that's just not going to happen on my watch... Sorry," said Miles.

David Arthur, another passerby, also watched the attack. He quickly snapped a picture of who he believed was one of the suspects, which he later gave to police.

"I take a lot of pictures with my camera, with my phone. It was just instinct," said Arthur of his quick thinking.

"It's going to take more than prayers. It's going to take more than the police department. It's going to take everybody getting involved," continued Miles, on the effort to curb crime in Richmond.
