Their aim is to get back there this year.
Cairo had won three straight titles dating back to 2010, but had their crown usurped by Westover last season.
The Makers certainly feel they have the talent to get it back in 2014.
Head coach Tom Fallaw feels the offense is ahead of last season, and the team is once again loaded with athletic talent on defense.
Cairo's practices are always intense, and that often carries to the field. Fallaw says there's no difference this year.
"If you don't practice with that intensity, you're not going to play with that intensity. It's not magically going to appear," Fallaw says. "I think our kids kind of understand that, especially the ones that have played. They seem to understand the pace a little more than the ones that haven't played and they kind of lead the way at practices, showing the kids the pace that you have to have."
The Syrupmakers open the 2014 season on August 29 when Thomasville comes to town.
