(WMC) - An 87-year-old man who molested a family member will spend two years in prison.
Charles Petty was sentenced Thursday and will not be eligible for parole or early release.
The victim's mother says the sentencing gave her children their power back.
"Know that they are survivors," she said. "Know that someone listened to them and like I said, that justice was served and he's going to jail for the crime he committed."
In court, the judge said he couldn't consider Petty's age as a factor for leniency because Petty was able to commit these crimes even though he was 87 years old and sick.
"Very difficult case for everybody involved," said DeSoto County Assistant District Attorney Steven Juvera. "Any time you have a case where a family is divided."
After serving his time, Petty will have to report to a probation officer for two years. If he violates any of the terms, he can be sentenced to 13 more years in prison.
