Senior class leading Raiders in 2014

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - The Southland Raiders know they have a chance to be a good football team this fall. New head coach Rod Murray certainly believes so.

Southland is fresh off a state semifinal appearance in 2013, and returns 17 seniors from a season ago.

Former Deerfield-Windsor coordinator Murray is pleased with what he's seen in his first go-round with the Raiders.

He says this team has a chance to be special, and adds having a large group of leaders like he has makes the transition easier for everyone.

"It helps tremendously. The day to day operations when you've got kids who are doing things the right way at practice and are leading by example, flying around. The young kids look up and they want to be like those guys one day," Murray says. "Certainly with the run this team had last year and with these guys returning, and the culture here, we're expect something good to happen and our seniors are leading the way on that."

The Raiders will jump right into it in 2014. They open the season on the road at defending state champion Westfield. That game is on August 22.
