NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

When the Karen Biggers-Tutt Regional Choir holds its annual concert on Saturday in Nacogdoches, its director will have an additional title.

Karen Christopher will use her new position to lift voices and awareness about the choir's mission.

At the Pine Flat CME Church the name of the pastor for the last 26 years remains on the sign out front.

Christopher has the authority to change it. This year, she was appointed by the Methodist bishop to lead the church. She has experience, but not always from the pulpit.

Christopher directs the Karen Biggers-Tutt Choir. The regional choir is named after a former member who died of cancer. Fifteen years later, the KBT Choir continues to raise money for families facing medical expenses.

It's a mission Christopher will direct in more ways than one.

“Now I'm pastor and also musician and also singer, so it's a tremendous undertaking now pulling everything together and getting everybody involved and going out and soliciting donations to help these five recipients that we have this year,” Christopher said.

Christopher will use her new position to promote Saturday's concert and the ongoing KBT mission.

“It is a very viable part of the Nacogdoches and the Lufkin community because some of our members come from the Lufkin churches, so we're very open as far as different denominations coming in and being a part of the choir,” Christopher said.

Christopher's first sermon as a pastor was moving forward. She's not so sure of next Sunday's topic, but listeners can be assured the message will provide guidance through praise and faith.

You can make donations to the KBT mission any time of the year at any Commercial Bank of Texas.

But if you want to attend the free benefit concert, it's this Saturday at 7 p.m. at Pine Flat CME Church.

You'll find the church on FM 3228. To get there, go east on Loop 224 in Nacogdoches and then south on FM 1275. You should hear the singing before you see the church.
