TEXARKANA, TX (KSLA) -

The City of Texarkana, Texas fire department used a custom from the past, to introduce it's latest equipment for fire fighting safety.

It was a special ceremony to officially welcome to town a new truck that can do five different firefighting processes.

The breaking of champagne bottles was part of a wet down ceremony in Texarkana, Thursday, an event to show the latest addition for the fire department - a $643,000 fire truck called Quint 5.

Fire Chief Eric Schlotter said the wet down ceremony is an event department's did when fire equipment was pulled by horses.

"When a department would get a new vehicle, they would transfer the water form the old vehicle to put it in service," he said. "Today we use the water from the oldvehiclee to wash the new vehicle."

Schlotter said the truck is a new beginning for the TTFD. For the past two years, the department has been working on instituting waht is called "the Quint Plan," that should bring about savings taxpayers while improving services.

"Now with the quint concept we have added vehicles that assume multiple functions, which has allowed us toreducee the overall vehicles in our fleet without reducing the number of staff positions," Schlotter said.

The TTFD now has six trucks for its 75-member department.
