(WMC) - Memphis Police Department says it has discovered even more untested rape kits, and the evidence dates back to the 1970s.
The department originally found 12,164 kits sitting on shelves untested, evidence from 1985 to present.
This year, the police department dedicated more officers to investigate the sexual assault kits.
The officers scoured every evidence shelf and found nearly 200 more kits dating back to 1976.
That means the total number of backlogged kits tracked since the city began an effort to end the backlog is 12,360.
Of those 12,360 kits, 7,651 still need analysis.
