(WMC)- If you're looking for a place to volunteer, but you don't know where or when to start, Volunteer Odyssey has launched a brand new volunteer opportunity calendar.

The calendar features volunteer opportunities at more than 30 nonprofits from across the Mid-South. Volunteer Odyssey has partnered with nonprofits like Porter-Leath, Urban Bicycle Food Ministry, Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center, Catholic Charities of West Tennessee, and Habitat For Hope.

The idea for the calendar came after volunteer coordinators started contacting Volunteer Odyssey Founder, Dr. Sarah Petschonek, for help get recruiting volunteers. She also saw an increase in request for individual volunteer opportunities and ways to get involved in Memphis.

"Our goal is to take potential volunteers and turn them into dedicated volunteers. That all begins with a starting point," Dr. Petschonek said.

"Volunteer Odyssey launched our Volunteer Opportunity Calendar, which is the most comprehensive calendar of volunteer opportunities in Memphis. It's the perfect addition to our programs for Job Seekers and Corporate teams. Now everyone can get started volunteering in Memphis and get to know Volunteer Odyssey," she said.

Volunteer Odyssey began as a seven-day volunteering/blogging tour of the Memphis nonprofit scene. This program was specifically geared for those between jobs who are on the hunt for their next great opportunity and looking for a way to give back in the process.

Overtime, the program has developed into providing volunteer experiences for corporations, small businesses, and individuals based on their interests.

"The calendar will allow us to continue to provide people access to opportunities, beyond an Odyssey week, that connect them with Memphis and make volunteering a part of their routine," Dr. Petschonek said.

In an earlier Breakdown video, we told you about the process that causes lightning and how powerful a bolt is when it strikes the ground. In this episode of the Breakdown, we will discuss thunder and answer the question of, can you have thunder without lightning? First, a quick recap on lightning: a bolt of lightning is as hot as 54,000 degrees Fahrenheit--that is more than five times hotter than the surface of the sun! May 27 marks the one year anniversary of a devastating wind storm that struck Memphis and the Mid-South and was later dubbed Memphis in May-hem.  On the evening of Saturday May 27 a line of strong storms moved southeast out of southern Missouri and into northeastern Arkansas.  The day had been very warm and muggy and was ripe for fueling any storms that entered the area.  This was also the final day of festivities in Downtown Memphis at Tom Lee for Memphis In May a...
