HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - For some, 2015 is beginning with a rocky start. Dozens of folks around the Tennessee Valley rang in the new year in a jail cell charged with a DUI. Other common arrests made were for public intoxication and minors in possession.

Defense Attorney Russell Crumbley says he is never surprised to get several phone calls in the days following New Years Eve and the Christmas holiday.

Although in recent years, Crumbley says the spike isn't as large as you'd expect. People tend to have a heightened awareness of the increased police presence on the streets and the DUI checkpoints.

Crumbley says a DUI will cost you big bucks with or without a lawyer. From court costs to higher insurance rates to the possibility of losing your job, it becomes a large financial burden. Some estimate a DUI wears a price tag of $10,000 to $20,000.

According to Crumbley, there is an emotional burden as well.

"There is a psychological impact of having to have spent the night in jail that I probably could not quantify in words,” said Crumbley. “But you can see it in the face of the people who never expected to spend the night in jail. They sit in the office and they just cry.”

Crumbley says the biggest hassle for most drivers is having their license suspended. Some instead opt for an interlock device that you are required to breathe into like a breathalyzer before starting your car. However, it remains installed in your car for far longer than your license would be suspended.
