MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Thanks to an outpouring of generosity, one Memphis woman won't have to worry about bracing for Wednesday night's big chill.
Local residents not only opened their hearts, but also their wallets to have Delores Christopher's utilities restored. Memphis Light, Gas, and Water officials promise that Christopher's heat will be back on by 11 p.m. Wednesday night.
"I just want to thank each and every heart that answered my cry," said Christopher.
A day after the gas was shut off to her South Memphis home, Christopher was delighted to hear it would be back on soon.
Following a story explaining MLGW's winter weather policy, a number of WMC Action News 5 viewers stepped up to pay Christopher's $450 delinquent bill through MLGW's "Gift of Comfort" program.
"Anybody can pay on a person's utility bill and all they need is the customer's address," said Gale Jones Carson, MLGW Corporate Communications Director.
Officials say they work with customers like Christopher to set up a payment plan, but the threat of cold weather is not enough to keep them from cutting services.
You can find Gift of Comfort cards at any MLGW office or online at mlgw.com.
