SHELBY COUNTY, TN (WMC) -

A big concern with low temperatures can be the road conditions. Shelby County Public Works Department is working hard to keep the roads safe.

Public works crews were at Collins Yard, where the salt trucks are kept, at 7 a.m. on Thursday.

Crews worked overnight tending to emergency situations, like broken water mains that cause water to run onto the roads.

When it's this cold, that water freezes quickly, causing hazardous conditions.

Public Works Deputy Director Robert Knecht said the department has an after-hours crew that is called out to work on the roads.

"We have salt trucks loaded and ready and staff will go out and apply salt and sand to it, to make sure that area is safe,"he said.
