MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Macy's Department Store has officially announced that they are closing their Southland Mall location in early Spring 2015.
Originally built as a Goldsmith's in the mid-1960's, the store will close just 10 years after becoming a Macy's.
"I think that's awful," said customer Jennifer Johnson. "I like that Macy's."
The Southland Mall Macy's is closing along with 14 other stores nationwide. It's part of a restructuring plan that includes new stores in some markets.
"Must be a reason, you know, sales might be down in this area," said Whitehaven resident Eric Hillard. "You know, everybody moving out a little bit further."
The blow to Southland Mall comes as the City of Memphis invests millions of dollars into the nearby Southbrook Mall.
"I have been placed on notice that Macy's in Southland Mall has decided to make a transition," said Memphis City Councilman Harold Collins in a written statement. "We are saddened by their actions but believe this does NOT signal the end to the oldest mall in Shelby County. We will work with mall management to seek a suitable replacement that will provide the goods and services the residents of Whitehaven deserve. With over 150 million dollars committed to invest in Whitehaven we are certain Southland Mall and all other retailers will continue to thrive in our Community."
"I want to see something here," said resident MD Williams. "I want to see Whitehaven flourish."
According to a Macy's press release, final clearance sales at the Southland Macy's begin January 12.
