Parents curious about school resource officer placed on paid leave

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Parents of Houston High School students want answers after the school's resource officer was placed on paid leave without much of an explanation.

Germantown Police Department is not in charge of the investigation. Deputy Williams Franks worked at the school, but why he is on paid leave remains a question.

"Parents deserve to know for sure," said parent Carol Withers.

"I think as a parent, if you have a student here, then you're entitled to know what's going on," agreed Michelle Shepard.

Shelby County Sheriff's Office would only say, "with any investigation of our personnel, we will not and do not discuss it, as long as it is ongoing."

"That's the person in authority that you're trusting to take care of your children," said parent Lisa Winter. "So, you would expect them to have model behavior, but we don't know the story yet."

Some parents think that's a problem, but others disagree.

"Investigations like this should be kept private until all the facts are out," Bill Powell added.

A spokesperson with Germantown Municipal School District said they are aware of the allegation. A second school resource officer remains at Houston High School.

"I do know Officer Franks is a lovely gentleman," Withers said, despite wanting to know why he is on leave. "My older two kids thought the world of him."

"I just think it's information that all parents should know," Shepard said.
