MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Fire investigators are still looking into what caused a fire in a South Memphis neighborhood early Monday morning. After speaking with neighbors, the possibility of arson is not being ruled out.
The fire happened in the 1200 block of Race Street, near Mississippi Boulevard and East McLemore Avenue. By the time firefighters arrived around 2 a.m., flames had engulfed the home.
Firefighters didn't find anyone inside the home during their initial search, but neighbors say they saw someone inside the house before the fire started.
This is the time of year where firefighters see a spike in vacant house fires as people try to stay warm in the cold weather. It could also be a possible case of arson.
The city began demolishing the house Monday morning, because fire made the structure unstable.
