MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

High school students at Fayette Academy in Somerville have been named "best in the state" in a contest to design smartphone apps that improve their community.

Students came up with an app called "D-Track" to help people manage their diabetes.

The app could sense when someone with the disease is getting behind the wheel, and then request that they test their blood sugar.

The results would then be forwarded to the person's caretaker to give them peace-of-mind.

The idea will now compete at the national level in the Verizon Innovative App Challenge.
