MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Two people suspected of trying to steal an ATV are in custody after an early morning search in a Frayser neighborhood.
The rumble of a police helicopter was not the morning alarm Frayser residents expected as police chased two men through their backyards. The search centered around University Street, Point Church Road, St. Elmo Avenue, and Corning Avenue.
Investigators say Danterio Owens and Christopher Campbell tried to make off with a trailer and an ATV. Police spotted both men hiding behind a house near University Street.
Police took Owens straight to jail, but Campbell had to first go to the hospital. Both men are now charged with evading arrest and two counts of theft of property $1,000-$10,000.
Investigators brought in police dogs to assist in the search. What was an intense moments for officers, looked more like a scene from a movie for 6th grade student Decario Shaw.
"I thought it was fantastic, because they were going on a chase," Shaw said. "I want to become a police officer when I grow up, so I can catch all the criminals and put them in jail."
Shaw said he heard the noise from inside his bedroom. That's when he and his mother locked down their house and turned on the news. Shaw was thrilled to see the action, but relieved to know police captured the suspects.
"I was really happy, because those people could've done anything to anybody," Shaw said.
Owens is being held on a $45,000 bond. Campbell's bond has not yet been announced.
