District 5 councilman announces plans to run for city mayor

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The City of Memphis mayoral race is heating up after city council member Jim Strickland announced he is running in for mayor.

Strickland is already coming out swinging against his opponent, current Mayor A C Wharton.

Strickland announced his decision in a tweet Thursday morning saying, "We need a new kind of leadership committed to change. That is why I am announcing my candidacy for Mayor of Memphis."

Mayor Wharton and Strickland may not be the only people running for the city's top job. Councilman Harold Collins says he is considering running for mayor, are there are even talks that Memphis Police Association President Mike Williams will throw his hat in the race.
