MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A makeshift memorial sits outside of the home on Rosecrest Road where a fire claimed the lives of a mother and her 2-year-old daughter Wednesday morning.
Makayla Kelley, 20, and her daughter Elizabeth Kelley were killed in the blaze. According to officials, it was caused by an accidental electrical fire.
"I was just trying to get to her and the baby and get them out," said Skylar Buehler.
Buehler was in the home when the fire broke out along with his brother, Chris Buehler, Makayla's boyfriend.
Skylar says after he escaped the fire, he realized Makayla and her daughter were still inside of the home. He says he went back into the home to try to save them but passed out from smoke inhalation.
"I tried and tried, but I passed out, and when I came to I was falling out the back door," said Buehler.
Just days before the fire, Makayla and Chris welcomed their newborn baby Annabella into the world. Now, Annabella is forced to grow up without her mother.
Skylar says his brother is up for the task.
"He's looking forward to it. We both are and I'm here to help with him too," said Buehler.
