Grass fire spreads to house, shed

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A grass fire caught a shed and house on fire south of Downtown Memphis on Tuesday evening.

No one was hurt, but flames came within inches of burning the woman's home on Woodland Avenue near Marjorie Street.

Video from Chopper 5 showed what looked like a ring of fire.

The blaze started in a backyard shed and even the back of the home received minor smoke damage.

The homeowner says no one lives in the shed and there is no power to the shed. She's suspicious of how the fire started.

Firefighters always tell folks to check on their neighbors. People in this neighborhood did that as soon as they heard sirens.

"That's my neighbor, Mrs. Graves, and I'm concerned about her," said resident Marilyn Duncan. "You know, I've seen that her house was on fire, so me being a neighbor, and I always visit my elderly neighbors, I keep a check on them. And I was just concerned about them."

It took fire crews less than an hour to control the flames.

Memphis Fire Department is still investigating the cause of this fire.
