No kids hurt after suspect runs into daycare

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - What's usually a safe haven for kids was the scene of a police investigation Tuesday afternoon.

Memphis police say undercover drug officers were following a suspect during an investigation when he ended up getting out of his car and running inside The Academy Daycare on Madison Avenue.

The suspect attempted to hide over nine grams of cocaine, according to police.

Joseph McDaniel says he has three nieces who attend school there.

"I came over here and I saw them put him in the back of a truck and everything," said McDaniel.

Glorece Bates was leaving work when she passed the scene.

"Anything could have happened, he could have went in there and shot people, kidnapped a child," said Bates.

A woman claiming to be the owner of the daycare told WMC Action News 5 on Tuesday that the doors were locked and no kids were hurt.

WMC asked police how the suspect got inside and was told they couldn't release any additional information.

Police also haven't released the details surrounding the investigation -- or the charges the suspect is facing. They did say he was arrested, no one was hurt, and no property was damaged.

Erica Cain has kids herself and can't believe it.

"Terrified, as far as the children, knowing that those were infants, babies, their lives in jeopardy like that," said Cain.
