MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The richest politician in the country is hoping to help nearly 30,000 people in Shelby, Fayette, and Tipton Counties become insured.
Forbes named Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam the "richest elected official in America," with a net worth of $2 billion. He was in Frayser on Wednesday promoting his Insure Tennessee plan.
The plan would extend health coverage to more than 200,000 low-income Tennesseeans.
"We think people should be covered, but we also think there should be a responsibility with that," Haslam said during a visit to Christ Community Health Center. "Doing nothing is not an option."
His visit happened to take place on the same day Forbes revealed its list of richest politicians. But, Haslam didn't want that to get in the way of his plans to help less fortunate residents.
"I have no idea where they get their information. The second, I've made a practice of never commenting on personal financial information. I don't think it's what the people of Tennessee care about and I'm gonna do my job," he said.
According to Forbes, that "information" is that Haslam owns 15 percent of the $38 billion in sales from Flying J. His father founded the business in 1958.
"People in Tennessee are tired of Washington not being able to solve problems and I think what they want to do is solve problems," Haslam said.
Voters say that, for the most part, should be his concern.
"It's a lot of money for someone to have," said resident Noah Welch. "That really doesn't have anything to do with the State of Tennessee."
