MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Music is what feelings sound like; maybe that's why the nation is dancing to a song with Memphis ties.
Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars' "Uptown Funk" song is ranked number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Royal Studios says this is the first No. 1 pop hit to come out of a Memphis studio since 1982. That song was the iconic Survivor hit, "Eye of the Tiger."
"Uptown Funk" was recorded in legendary Royal Studios on Willie Mitchell Boulevard. The last No. 1 hit out of that studio came in 1972 when Al Green recorded "Let's Stay Together."
The song has even more Memphis ties with Kameron Whalum playing trombone on the track. Whalum graduated from Overton High School. His father is the pastor at Oliver Baptist Church.
The continued success of "Uptown Funk" guarantees that the word is out – No. 1 hits are still born in Memphis, Tennessee.
