SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC) - Varying opinions are being voiced over what to call the new outlet mall that is being built in Southaven.
Construction is underway at what will soon be a Tanger outlet mall. But, some residents are already making their voices clear on what the mall's name should be.
"Mall of Southaven," suggested resident Alexandria Mebius.
"It's for the whole Mid-South area, so call it Mall of the Mid-South," Jennifer Coburn said.
People in Shelby County and DeSoto County are getting in on the conversation.
"I like Southaven better," said Kevin Reed. "That's why we moved down here."
At a public meeting on Tuesday, Southaven residents were adamant that they do not want the name to have "Memphis" in it because they want their up-and-coming city to be more respected.
"Technically, it's not going to be in Memphis is it?" Mebius asked.
Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite said "Tanger Outlets Memphis" was language used in a national news release by Tanger regarding the possible name for the mall. However, no official name has been made public yet.
"When people ask me where I'm from, since most people don't know where Southaven is on a map, I tell them I'm from Memphis," explained Jennifer Coburn.
Pete Cookston is part-owner of Memphis Barbecue Company in Horn Lake, which borders Southaven.
"This barbecue place is more about the style of Memphis barbecue as opposed to geographic location," said Cookston, who, despite it all, believes the mall's name should have some kind of Southaven connection. "I think in the long run it would certainly help them get people down here."
The mall is expected to open later this year at the corner of Church Road and I-55.
Tanger Outlets have yet to respond to WMC Action News 5's calls.
