MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Sparkel Hastings is charged with aggravated assault and vehicular homicide after investigators determined she was driving erratically, causing her to lose control of her vehicle on Jones Road near Raleigh Millington Road.
The boys were walking on the sidewalk when they were hit.
Joshua McDowell, 11, died on the scene. A second victim, also a young boy, remains in critical condition at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital.
McDowell's family members are still trying to understand what happened.
"It's just senseless," said McDowell's aunt, Cynthia Taylor. "Senseless that anytime that anybody's life is taken for the sake of not paying attention and doing something they shouldn't be doing. It just took a life."
Hastings was driving with a suspended license and without insurance.
